A professor of criminal justice has conducted an extensive study documenting the US as the mass-shooting capital of the world and arriving at contributing factors, 2 of which are not what one would expect.

  1. It is sobering to think that ease of gun ownership, coupled with lack of access to “the American Dream’ plus an American obsession with fame can manifest in our nation
    be a world leader among shooting deaths. Today’s NY Times ran an article about how poverty, more than the educational system we have, may explain why our students consistently are lower scoring among nations. A high level of poverty can play into a sense of despair about achieving the American Dream and make someone’s moments of
    fame as a mass shooter attractive. Seems like we now need to take a hard look at
    poverty in the US….

  2. When expectations are high, failing to achieve what is expected results in increased levels of frustration and anger. And if one’s ability to control oneself is limited (as it is in young males — because their prefrontal cortexes are not yet fully developed), the anger and frustration play outward in agression. So, we not only need to reduce poverty — we also need to provide means for young people to reach/achieve their goals while at the same time limiting their access to substances and materials that can be used to kill.
