Behind The Headline–George Clooney on Hillary

George Clooney being the celebrity he is, people are curious about what he says and thinks. Even I was curious about his comments on why Hillary Clinton lost. The media headlines quoted him saying that he never saw her elevate her game. It was part of a long article in the Daily Beast prompted by his new movie. Since he had been a supporter of Hillary and had given a fund raiser in her honor it was only natural that he be asked about it. He did say he never saw her elevate her game, but the headline takes the phrase out of its natural context.  He began by saying how qualified she was, and how she is not good at communicating things and that her speeches did not soar. That’s when the elevating her game comment came in. After he made it he went on to say how because she was a woman she had a more uphill battle, then he repeated her lack of communication skills saying “ I think that she wasn’t particularly good at articulating the things that she wanted to do, and unfortunately we live at a time right now where articulating what you want to do is more potent in the electorate than the other way around…”  It all puts the headline in a totally different light, doesn’t it?  The statement goes from implied criticism to observation.

The whole incident is not only a good reminder that we need to look behind headlines and not jump to conclusions, but also that we live in a culture where style  trumps content— no pun is intended!

  1. I think the reason Hillary lost was not about her style but about her content. She supported rule by corporate money and a militarist foreign policy
