  • “The Tenacity of Hope”

The tenacity of hope! A magnificent phrase I learned from an editorial in The Guardian and which was inspired by the theme of the Catholic Church’s latest Jubilee year, hope. It is a phrase worth pondering. As embedded as hope may be in the human psyche, the depth of its meaning can only be reached when it shies away from optimistic speculation. To live up to its power the phrase as well as its concept must be accompanied by clarity and often by intelligent action. While I grant that hope in its often mundane version as optimistic speculation may have its uses, if it is to be a catalyst and a partner to resolve many of the human issues before us, then it must go beyond wishful thinking and superficial doings. When hope strengthens us to endure to the end of a difficult time, when hope becomes the guide to finding a needed answer, when its tenacity endows us with the best of being human, then as many of us can attest hope can indeed be magnificent.
